10 Classic Trypophobia Triggers

1. Lotus seedpod

The symbol of trypophobia. The seed pod left after the lotus flower withers. Seeds nested inside dense holes give many people the crawls.

2. Honeycomb

A perfect hexagonal geometric pattern. Even an empty honeycomb — no bees required — is a classic trigger.

3. Sunflower seeds

Masses of seeds arranged in spirals. Mathematically beautiful as a natural Fibonacci sequence, but difficult for people with trypophobia.

4. Pomegranate seeds

The dense red seeds of a halved pomegranate. Triggers hide in fruit, too.

5. Skin pores (magnified)

Macro photography of human pores. Even something on your own skin can provoke strong disgust when enlarged.

6. Salmon roe & cod roe

Food, yet a powerful trigger. People who dislike clusters of popping beads may be unable to eat them at all.

7. Shower head

A cluster of water holes — the most familiar everyday trigger. Some people always look away before showering.

8. Barnacles

Crustaceans that attach in dense colonies to rocks and ship hulls. The sight of countless small individuals clustered together evokes aversion.

9. Fungal spores

Spore clusters of mushrooms and molds seen under the microscope. The classic microscopic-genre trigger.

10. Deep-sea egg clusters

Egg masses of deep-sea fish and mollusks. Black dots inside translucent beads are known to provoke especially strong reactions.
